What power are you getting on level 5 troops?

Fang level 5's have been reduced in cost from 5200 to 4800. Yay.
However they are still one of the worst lvl 5's in the game. they are 12 power, but you only gain 5 power overall since you train 2 swordmaidens into the 1 hydra.

It does. For some reason I was thinking it was a 1-->1 conversion. By the time I got them in my first round, I wasn't really paying attention to individual power

Yeah, most races absorb 2 lvl 1's into the lvl 5. I believe undead and troll use 3, even then they are way more efficient.
I would try to limit Hydra's as much as possible for two reasons. 1. AWFUL return on power for the gold spent. 4800 for 5 power when you can buy a valkyrie for 2450 gaining 5 power as well. 2 they don't get armory items, so it's just raw power.
However they are essential to get at least a few buildings worth just for morale. I ended last round with about 450 i think.

Yah, that's why I finally bought my first level of them today. I was getting down on moral for level 1 and 2 and the 45k was much easier to get than the 90k
